What are the potential applications of stem cell research?

Stem cells can be used to study development

Stem cells may help us understand how a complex organism develops from a fertilised egg. In the laboratory, scientists can follow stem cells as they divide and become increasingly specialized, making skin, bone, brain, and other cell types. Identifying the signals and mechanisms that determine whether a stem cell chooses to carry on replicating itself or differentiate into a specialized cell type, and into which cell type, will help us understand what controls normal development.

Some of the most serious medical conditions, such as cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation. A better understanding of the genetic and molecular controls of these processes may yield information about how such diseases arise and suggest new strategies for therapy. This is an important goal of stem cell research.

Stem cells have the ability to replace damaged cells and treat disease:

This property is already used in the treatment of extensive burns, and to restore the blood system in patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders.
Stem cells may also hold the key to replacing cells lost in many other devastating diseases for which there are currently no sustainable cures. 

Today, donated tissues and organs are often used to replace damaged tissue, but the need for transplantable tissues and organs far outweighs the available supply. Stem cells, if they can be directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat diseases including Parkinson's, stroke, heart disease and diabetes. 
This prospect is an exciting one, but significant technical hurdles remain that will only be overcome through years of intensive research.

Stem cells could be used to study disease
In many cases it is difficult to obtain the cells that are damaged in a disease, and to study them in detail. Stem cells, either carrying the disease gene or engineered to contain disease genes, offer a viable alternative. Scientists could use stem cells to model disease processes in the laboratory, and better understand what goes wrong.

Stem cells could provide a resource for testing new medical treatments

New medications could be tested for safety on specialized cells generated in large numbers from stem cell lines – reducing the need for animal testing. Other kinds of cell lines are already used in this way. Cancer cell lines, for example, are used to screen potential anti-tumour drugs.

Stem Cell Research & Therapy provides additional support for Turmeric



Turmeric a healer of the brain as well as the body
   Long considered impossible to accomplish, new research reveals how a simple spice might contribute to the regeneration of the damaged brain.
Turmeric is hands down one of the, if not the, most versatile healing spice in the world with over 600 experimentally confirmed health benefits, and an ancient history filled with deep reverence for its seemingly compassionate power to alleviate human suffering.
But, most of the focus over the past decade has been centered on only one of its many hundreds of phytocompounds: namely, the primary polyphenol in turmeric known as curcumin which gives the spice its richly golden hue.  
This curcumin-centric focus has lead to the development of some very good products, such as phospholipid bound curcumin concentrate (e.g. Meriva, BCM-95) which greatly helps to increase the absorption and bio-activity of curcumin. But, curcumin isolates are only capable of conferring a part of turmeric’s therapeutic power – and therein lies the limitation and hubris of the dominant ‘isolate the active ingredient’ model.

Indeed, it has become typical within the so-called nutraceutical industry to emulate the pharmaceutical model, which focuses on identifying a particular “monochemical” tree within the forest of complexity represented by each botanical agent, striving to standardize the delivery of each purported ‘active ingredient’ with each serving, as if it were a pharmaceutical drug. These extraction and isolation processes also generates proprietary formulas which are what manufacturers want to differentiate their product from all others and henceforth capture a larger part of the market share; a value proposition that serves the manufacturer and not the consumer/patient.

Truth be told, there is no singular ‘magic bullet’ in foods and herbs responsible for reproducing the whole plant’s healing power.  There are, in fact, in most healing plants or foods hundreds of compounds orchestrated by the intelligent ‘invisible hand’ of God or ‘Nature,’ or whatever you wish to call it, and which can never be reduced to the activity of a singularly quantifiable phytocompound or chemical.

Beyond The Curcumin ‘Magic Bullet’ Meme

Now, an exciting new study published in the journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy provides additional support for the concept that curcumin alone is not enough to explain the healing power of turmeric as a whole plant. The study found that a little known, fat-soluble component within turmeric – Ar-tumerone – may make “a promising candidate to support regeneration in neurologic disease.”
Titled, “Aromatic-turmerone induces neural stem cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo,” German researchers evaluated the effects of this turmeric-derived compound on neural stem cells (NSCs) – the subgroup of brain cells capable of continuous self-renewal required for brain repair.
The study found that when brain cells were exposed to ar-tumerone, neural stem cells increased in number through enhanced proliferation. Moreover, these newly formed neural stem cells also increased the number of fully differentiated neuronal cells, indicating a healing effect was taking place. This effect was also observed in a live animal model, showing that rats injected with ar-tumerone into their brains experienced increases in neural stem cell proliferation and the creation of newly formed healthy brain cells.

How To Get The Most Out of Your Turmeric
One of the most frequent questions we field is ‘what is the best type of turmeric or curcumin to use’? Obviously, given the aforementioned research, the whole plant is going to carry a wider range of therapeutic compounds than curcumin alone. And yet, most have been heavily enculturated to focus entirely on the ‘how much’ question, opting to identify the molecular weight (i.e. how many milligrams in a serving) of a particular compound as more important than the qualitative dimensions (e.g. is it organic? It is delivered within its natural context as food or a whole plant?) which reflect the type of nutrigenomic information the substance contains, and therefore the ‘intelligence’ it embodies. And really, there is no generic answer to a generic question about the best way to take turmeric/curcumin. The question always comes from an individual with a particular need, and so, recommendations must be bio-individualized.

For instance, if you have colonic inflammation or polyps, and you are trying to use turmeric to reduce inflammation there or regress precancerous growths, then using the whole plant is best versus a highly bioavailable form of curcumin in capsule form (e.g. Meriva), for instance, which will likely be absorbed by the small intestine and mostly pass through the liver never getting adequate quantities to the large intestine. So, in this person’s case taking a teaspoon of relatively difficult to absorb turmeric may result in painting the diseased surfaces of that person’s intestinal or colonic lumen with exactly the form needed to reverse disease.

But what if you have someone who wants to experience a systemic effect, say, for arthritis or for brain cancer? In these instances, getting turmeric compounds such as curcumin through the glucuronidation barrier in the liver with a phospholipid-bound or black pepper (piperine) combination could be ideal. There is certainly a place for the ‘nutraceutical’ model when properly applied, especially when provided as an adjuvant to the pharmaceutical model within an integrative medical setting.

Ultimately, the goal is not to wait to have such a serious health problem that you have to force yourself to take a ‘heroic dose’ of any herb or food extract. Better is to use small amounts in culinary doses in combination with ingredients that synergize on a physiochemical/informational and sensual basis (producing the all important vitamin P [pleasure] as well!). Recently we actually featured a study that showed culinary doses of rosemary helped improve memory whereas higher ‘heroic’ doses impaired it!

his is why exploring the use of turmeric in curries, or by adding a pinch in a smoothie, may be an ideal daily supplementation approach, versus capsules, whose questionably ‘natural’ capsules and excipients all can add up to cause some stress on the liver you are trying to protect with these natural interventions.  Just remember quality is everything and less is more!

Combat Food Poisoning at Home



Most of us have suffered through food poisoning at one time or another. Food poisoning is caused by bacteria or other toxins in food. Some of the symptoms are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Food poisoning should not be ignored.

When you are suffering from food poisoning, your body will lose more water than normal. So try to stay well hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water throughout the day. The water will help flush out the toxins and bacteria causing your symptoms. Along with water, you can also drink diluted fruit juice and broth. You can also start treatment immediately with simple and readily available ingredients from your kitchen.

1. Ginger
Ginger is an excellent home remedy for curing almost all types of digestive problems related to food poisoning.
You can drink one cup of ginger tea after eating lunch or dinner to stop heart burn, nausea and other symptoms associated with food poisoning. To make ginger tea, boil one teaspoon grated ginger in a cup of water for a few minutes, add sugar and your tea is ready
Add a few drops of ginger juice to one teaspoon of honey and swallow it several times a day to reduce inflammation and pain.
Eating raw ginger increases the acid level in your stomach, which will help you digest your food more quickly.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Though acidic in nature apple cider vinegar has an alkaline effect due to the way it is metabolized in the body. Thus, it can alleviate various food poisoning symptoms. It can soothe the gastrointestinal lining and kill the bacteria, giving you instant relief.

Just mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water and drink it before eating any solid food to prevent acid indigestion.
Alternatively, you can drink two tablespoons of undiluted apple cider vinegar.

3. Fenugreek Seeds and Yogurt
Yogurt is another anti-bacterial agent that can counter attack the bacteria that cause food poisoning. You can take one teaspoon fenugreek seeds along with a tablespoon of yogurt. You just need to swallow the seeds and need not chew them. The combining effect of fenugreek seeds and yogurt will give you an immediate relief from stomach pain as well as vomiting.

4. Lemon
The anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties in lemons can give you much relief. The acid in lemons helps kill bacteria that cause food poisoning.

Just add a pinch of sugar to one teaspoon of lemon juice and drink it two to three times a day.
You can also sip on warm water with lemon juice to clean out your system.

5. Basil
Basil is an excellent herb that can cure infections caused by food poisoning. You can get the benefits from basil in several ways.

Drink basil juice with a tablespoon of honey several times a day.
Put a few drops of basil oil in one liter of drinking water. Drink it slowly throughout the day to kill bacteria causing stomach pain and other problems.
Add basil leaves, some sea salt, and a pinch black pepper to three tablespoons of plain yogurt. Eat this three to four times a day until your symptoms are gone.

6. Garlic
Garlic is also very effective in fighting food poisoning due to its strong antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It relieves symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain by destroying unhealthy microbes in the intestines.
Eat one fresh garlic clove, swallowing it with water. If you can tolerate the smell of garlic, you can also try garlic juice.
Alternatively, you can make a mixture of garlic oil and soybean oil and rub it on your stomach after eating.


Personal favorite:
If you feel a bit queasy, a strong cup or two of fresh ginger root tea may be sufficient to ward off further discomfort. Ginger is loaded with potent anti-inflammatory compounds that help to quell nausea and gastric distress. You can drink ginger tea as often as you like. Often, this does the trick. I recommend the natural ginger tea made from root that you can easily buy at the market..

Five ways to boost your sperm count



As a new study into the effects of lifestyle on sperm quality is published, we round up five unusual ways to improve your sperm. The world’s largest study on the effects of lifestyle on the quality of sperm has been published this week, with some surprising findings. Researchers at the universities of Manchester and Sheffield found that smoking cannabis can have a severe effect on male fertility, yet other lifestyle choices such as drinking alcohol and wearing tight briefs were not considered to cause problems, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Sperm quality has been in decline for decades, and scientists seem unable to make up their minds as to the exact causes, citing everything from smoking to an increased exposure to oestrogen.

The latest evidence is good news for jockstrap-wearers and bad news for dope smokers, but how else can you improve your sperm count? Walkers Eat red food Last month a report published by Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic, following analysis of 12 studies conducted by different groups around the world, found that consumption of lycopene improved the quality, mobility and volume of sperm dramatically, increasing sperm count by up to 70 per cent. Lycopene is an essential nutrient found commonly in red fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, strawberries, cherries and peppers.

Lay off the laptop A 2011 study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility suggested there could be a link between using a laptop with a Wi-Fi connection and a reduction in sperm quality. Sperm samples from 29 men were stored normally and under a laptop connected to WiFi. The sperm stored under the laptop became more sluggish and showed signs of DNA damage.

Get off your bike Cycling has myriad health benefits, but not when it comes to your sperm. A 2009 Spanish study by the Andalusian Center of Sports Medicine and the University of Las Palmas found that a prolonged spell on your bike can severely affect the shape and quality of your spermatozoids. After monitoring 15 Spanish triathletes with an average age of 33 the study found that “those that systematically cycled 300 kilometers a week– had less than 4pc, which is considered a fertility problem”. Keep your cool The optimum temperature for sperm production is 34.5 degrees celsius, which is slightly below body temperature. A three-year University of California study in 2007 found that five out of 11 men who stopped taking hot baths experienced a sperm count rise of almost 500 per cent.
Drink coffee - but not too much In 2003, researchers from Sao Paolo University in Brazil studied 750 men and concluded that drinking coffee can improve the swimming speed of human sperm, although whether this means pregnancy rates are higher among coffee drinkers is unclear. Other studies have suggested that drinking just three cups of coffee a day can cause genetic mutations in sperm, making it harder for them to successfully fertilise an egg.

Low Vitamin "D" levels can contribute to premature death

Study links low vitamin D levels with premature death

In recent months, there has been much debate surrounding vitamin D. Some studies have suggested that a high level of the vitamin benefits our health, while others have reported that there is not enough evidence to make such a claim. Now, a new study from the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine suggests a link between vitamin D deficiency and early death.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our bones, as well as aid cell communication and strengthen the immune system.
Researchers have long associated vitamin D deficiency with poor bone health. In fact, 3 years ago, the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that low vitamin D is hazardous because it significantly increases the risk of bone disease.

But the health problems associated with vitamin D deficiency do not stop there. Last year, Medical News Today reported on a study led by the University of Kentucky, which indicated that vitamin D deficiency may damage the brain. More recent research claimed that low levels of vitamin D in the first 26 weeks of pregnancy may increase the risk of preeclampsia.

Subjects with lower vitamin D levels 'twice as likely to die prematurely'

The researchers conducted a systemic review of 32 studies that analyzed vitamin D, blood levels and mortality rates. The studies involved 566,583 participants from 14 counties - including the US - who were an average age of 55.

"This study should give the medical community and public substantial reassurance that vitamin D is safe when used in appropriate doses up to 4,000 IU per day," says study co-author Heather Hofflich.
Participants' 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were assessed. This is the main form of vitamin D found in human blood.
Results of the study revealed that participants with lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in their blood were twice as likely to die prematurely, compared with those who had higher blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Furthermore, the team found that the 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood level associated with approximately half of participants who were at higher risk of early death was 30 ng/ml - a level that around two thirds of Americans are already below.


"According to the National Institutes of Health, children and adults ages 1-70 should have 600 IU (international units) of vitamin D each day, while adults over this age should have 400 IU a day."

It seems that the list of omega-3 benefits is ever growing. In everything from supporting a healthy cardiovascular system to healthy joints, inflammation levels, eyes, mood, bones and skin, omega-3s do a lot.
Now, recent research points toward the idea that omega-3s, particularly DHA, may positively affect the quality of sleep. Although there are few studies on the relationship between omega-3s and sleep, some studies show that higher levels of omega-3s are associated with fewer sleeping problems in both children and adults. In fact, a newer study from Oxford University says that of children studied who took 600mg daily of the omega-3 DHA for four months, they slept for an hour longer each night with fewer sleep disturbances.
At the beginning of the study, parents and caregivers rated the children’s sleep habits over a typical week on the well-validated Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire. The responses indicated that about 40 percent of the children had clinical-level sleep problems, including resisting bedtime, being anxious about sleep and frequent waking throughout the night.
The study’s findings were published in the Journal of Sleep Research.
What does all this mean? Paul Montgomery, study author and professor of psycho-social intervention at the University of Oxford, believes this: DHA helps to release melatonin, the hormone that gets you to sleep. “In turn, that helped with the onset of sleep and the stabilization of it,” Montgomery explains. Additionally, it was noted that while melatonin levels change throughout life, omega-3s seem to help normalize those shifts in melatonin levels.
Montgomery also points out that omega-3s can support a healthy mental state in adults. “Core features of unhealthy mental states are sleep problems, and it wouldn’t surprise me if these things were linked,” he states.
While more studies need to be done on the relationship between omega-3 intake and sleep, the findings look promising—especially since omega-3s have a long list of health benefits already.
How can you get more omega-3s in your diet? Some excellent  sources of omega-3s include coldwater fish, preferably wild, such as salmon, cod, halibut and tuna; organic eggs from hens allowed to feed on insects. Likewise, you can get ample omega-3s from  flaxseeds and flaxseed oil; chia seeds; walnuts and other nuts; and more.
You can even get raw omega-3s in your diet, including some raw vegetables, fruits and nuts. There are even “hidden” omega-3s in foods such as fermented dairy—including yogurt, kefir, cream and hard cheeses—as well as strawberries; blueberries; raspberries; avocados; spinach; zucchini; kale; broccoli; quinoa; lentils; barley; and more.
So, enjoy those omega-3s! It could mean better sleep quality.
